Came here for my boyfriend's 31st bday on a Saturday at 6pm. It wasn't too crowded and they sat the 13 of us on one long table which was nice. The service by Gabriel was amazing! He was very attentive and gave great suggestions for food and drinks.
The Hot Chicken and Duck were very popular. As well as the Stone Cold for cocktails. The Hot Chicken serving size is like basically half a chicken. So it's very big. It's very juicy and the bread under it is so good. -

Now that I think about it, my feelings about HOTR are very similar to the two other businesses at this address: West Town Bakery and Roots Pizza. None of the three are places that I would say are significantly great at any one thing, but all are solid performers that work well as neighborhood standbys and not much else.
But I'll admit that I was disappointed by my experience at HOTR last week. I had a couple of items that featured standout elements...for example, the Bread Basket had three different breads on hand, but besides the focaccia, I didn't need to eat the other two breads on the plate. The seafood fritters were tasty; fine, really, but not special. The steak frites (hangar steak) were also just fine, but the frites were larger potato slices that needed some seasoning to feel interesting...and the steak was only so-so.
My wife enjoyed her mocktail (she is not pregnant, but she wanted to try something a little unique), so that was an interesting play. But otherwise, nothing we tried was a must.
A special note about our server; I eat out almost every day and I'm pretty sure our server was the most high-energy person I've ever met at a restaurant. Ever. It was borderline overwhelming; that didn't color the overall experience, but did provide us with some chances for fun commentary in-between his visits. "He must sleep so well at night!" was the comment my wife and I made the most after each stop by our table! -

I really wanted to like this place but sadly it felt a bit disorganized and confusing.
Me and a friend of ours had dinner there last night. Upon arrival to the address which is roots pizza we was left confused about how exactly to get upstairs to homesteam on the roof. Then when we actually found our way upstairs there was no one to seat us so we waited a few minutes for someone to come and seat us, which was not really a big problem. My big problem with this place was the slowness with having our food actually served on us. There was a handful of other dinners there but it took close to a hour to have our dinners to the table.
Also sadly the food it's self that we ordered was just nothing exceptional for the pricing. I had the salmon and my friend had a burger. After he left he complained to me about the grease factor in his food. My dish was sort of bland. The server was nice which which is the reason for the three stars but the food it's self and the time it took to have it come out is where you would be left confused. -

One of my favorite rooftops in the city. It's located above Roots pizza but you feel like you're stepping into a different world. We started with the bread basket which had multiple times of breads and multiple spreads. I just about licked the honey butter jar clean!
The cauliflower was a very generous portion and cooked perfectly. Some of the best cauliflower I've ever had. The wild mushrooms with egg were amazing as well. Too hard to pick a favorite dish as everything was amazing.
I love that they grow a lot of the food on the roof, just about as local as you can get. I can't wait to back once it gets warm again! -

Just meh. I liked the concept, but none of the dishes really wowed me, nor did the service, and it was pretty pricey for what you got. Came here with a group and we split into duos to order food. My buddy and I got the Brussel Sprouts, seasonal soup (pea soup), and she got the pork chop and I got the salmon semi crudo (which was a second-choice when I learned they were out of scallops).
The Brussel sprouts were cooked, well, but advertised as 'pad thai' and I couldn't figure out what made them pad thai except a few peanuts thrown in the bowl. They had good flavor, I just don't know that it was anything really Thai inspired. The pea soup was pretty good if you got a spoonful with all the flavors (there were pieces of Meyer lemon as well as creme fraiche), but it was hard to get one of those so it mostly fell flat. My friend said her porckhop was pretty good, but the pork/bacon pie that came with it was the star. My salmon semi crudo was good, it had good flavor and the crackers it came with were interesting.
Service was spotty-in the beginning he seemed suuuuuuper eager to take our order, then as the meal went on he got less attentive. The guy who brought our soup (not our main server), did not bring us spoons to eat it with, and ran away before we could ask. We had to flag down two different people before we could get spoons (we asked our server and he must've forgotten).
We were sitting outside, which was a nice ambiance, but the bench I was sitting on was not comfortable. There was some sort of a curtain strung up behind the bench, held in place with some rods, and the rod hit me right in the back of the head so I had to awkwardly sit with my head forward. If I was taller it would've been fine, so part of that is due to my height but seems like that could've been avoided. The bench was also very high off the ground (I couldn't touch the floor) and hit the back of my knees awkwardly. Again, due to my height, but I've been plenty of places where those weren't issues.
Kinda pricey too, considering I split two appetizer sizes, had one appetizer to myself, and one drink, and paid $50. If the food had blown me away I might feel differently, but it really was just 'meh.'
